Cro-Magnon :: Cromañón 2004

 Cromañón – 5th Anniversary of a brutal tragedy 

I’ve been following this story closely for nearly 5 years and wanting to share with the world about it.

Many other people have done so previously, some of them very eloquently. Here’s my way of re-telling this tragic story. 

I would like to thank Laura Marcello, my Argentinian virtual friend and photographer for her strikingly powerful images, patience, and understanding while I put together this very difficult  and heart-wrenching project.

Let’s not let this happen again, EVER!

On December 30, 2004 approximately 2811 young people from varied backgrounds and interests, set out to see a live show of the Rock’n Roll group Callejeros, at a night club called Cro-Magnon Republic (also known as Cromañón.) What was to be a celebration ended with the tragic death of 194 children, and over 700 wounded.
On August 19, 2009 the Criminal Court No. 24 of Buenos Aires, ruled on the decision for the 15 charged by the fire on 30 December 2004, that broke out at the Cro-Magnon Republic disco, leaving 194 dead.

The main defendant, Omar Chaban, nightclub manager at the time, received a jail sentence of 20 years, as the perpetrator of the crimes of willful negligence followed by death and active bribery. The prosecution had requested between 23 and 26 years on behalf of the complainants.

In turn, Raul Villarreal, Chabán’s primary partner, was sentenced to 16 years for the crimes of willful manslaughter and active bribery as a participant. The complainants asked for 25 years.

Meanwhile, members of the rock band Callejeros, who played that night in Cromañón, were acquitted. However, the former manager of the group, Diego Argarañaz, was sentenced to 18 years prison for the crime of qualified arson.

This video was produced as a homage to the young innocents.

El 30 de Diciembre del 2004 aproximadamente 2.811 jóvenes, de variados orígenes e intereses, se dispusieron a ver el show en vivo de la banda Callejeros, en un conocido boliche llamado República de Cromañón (también conocido como Cro-magnon.) Lo que iba a ser una fiesta concluyó con la trágica muerte de 194 chicos, y más de 700 heridos.

El 19 de Agosto de 2009 el Tribunal Oral Criminal Nº24 de Buenos Aires, dictaminó el fallo para los 15 imputados por el incendio del 30 de diciembre de 2004, que se desató en la discoteca República Cromañón, dejando 194 muertos.

El principal acusado, Omar Chabán, administrador del local nocturno en la época, recibió una sentencia de 20 años, como autor de los delitos de estrago doloso seguido de muerte y cohecho activo (pago de coimas). Se habían solicitado entre 23 y 26 años por parte de los querellantes.

A su vez, Raúl Villarreal, principal colaborador de Chabán, fue condenado a 16 años por los delitos de estrago doloso seguido de muerte y cohecho activo, pero en calidad de partícipe. Los querellantes llegaron a pedir hasta 25 años.

En tanto, los integrantes de la banda de rock Callejeros, que esa noche tocaban en Cromañón, fueron absueltos. Sin embargo, el ex manager del grupo, Diego Argarañaz, fue condenado a 18 años de prisión por el delito de incendio doloso calificado.

Este es un homenaje a las inocentes victimas de esta tragedia.

Nuances d’Hiver

Nuances d’Hiver (fr) = Shades of Winter

 Winter in New England –  I chose a french name for this creation because I liked the sound it conveyed and its unique feeling. Tried to create a magical time, full of shades, nuances, harshness and surprises. The images span from metro Boston area and its parks, to western Massachusetts, Vermont and coastal Maine.

This video was composed from end of November through most of December. The intention and inspiration was to capture winter’s subtleties and contrast it with the striking power and images it offers to the wandering eye. As I began formulating the “feel and look” it became evident that I needed to get the help of others to conclude this work. In the process I came to “virtually” befriend nice people, who took the time to educate me on subtleties as well. Thanks to Justin Morgan for taking the time to guide me into the “nuances” of Creative Commons.

The elements used in this project are:

(some HDR photographs, others have been modified in post to pseudo HDR and/or vignette).  Pseudo time-lapse was done post.

New York City – A Different Apple

  • This project was a lot of fun, discovery and amazement to produce. I started working on the concept in mid-October. Had to set up some collaborations with photographers, do the research, gather my thoughts, lay out a story line, then go fetch images and scour my archives for older images which may be still relevant. The idea was to show NYC in a different light, from different angles and using striking images with accentuated colors.

As it progressed, the piece looked better and better and I was really encouraged by the support of some of the photographers,  especially Trey Ratcliff who opened up its treasure chest of beautiful HDRs to me.

The inspiration to make a video/photo montage of this area came a long time ago.I always loved mountains when combined with desert areas. So, after much digging, research, sourcing, and looking for some collaboration, I found Noam Fein who generously released some beautiful images to me, making this project possible. Some images are from an area north of the Atacama which has more lakes and some precipitation.Music: Precious by DJ Answer at

Also included in this project, aerial images from the Japan Aerospace Agency (JAXA) taken from satellites above the earth, so as to get a “birds-eye” view of the area while animating it as if in real flight.. There are also some paintings and images by unknown indian artists.




Additional Background, History and Information

Ecodesert Region – The Atacama Desert is a virtually rainless plateau in South America, covering a 600-mile (1,000 km) strip of land on the Pacific coast of South America, west of the Andes mountains. The Atacama desert is, according to NASA, National Geographic and many other publications, the driest desert in the world. The rain shadow on the leeward side of the Chilean Coast Range, as well as a coastal inversion layer created by the cold offshore Humboldt Current, keep this over 20 million-year-old desert 50 times drier than California’s Death Valley.

The Atacama occupies 40,600 square miles (105,000 km2) in northern Chile, composed mostly of salt basins (salares), sand, and lava flows.

The Atacama Desert ecoregion, extends from a few kilometers south of the Chile-Peru border to about 30° south latitude. To the north lies the Sechura Desert ecoregion, in Peru, while to the south is the Chilean Matorral ecoregion. The National Geographic Society considers the coastal area of southern Peru to be part of the Atacama desert, including the deserts south of the Ica Region.

To the east lies the less arid Central Andean dry puna ecoregion. The drier portion of this ecoregion is located south of the Loa River between the parallel Sierra Vicuña Mackenna and Cordillera Domeyko. To the north of the mentioned river lies the Pampa del Tamarugal.

People – The Atacama is sparsely populated. In an oasis, in the middle of the desert, at about 2,000 metres (7,000 ft) elevation, lies the village of San Pedro de Atacama. Its church was built by the Spanish in 1577. In pre-Hispanic times, before the Inca empire, the extremely arid interior was inhabited mainly by the Atacameño tribe. The tribe is noted for the construction of fortified towns called pucara(s), one of which can be seen a few kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama.

History – During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries under the Spanish Empire, towns grew along the coast as shipping ports for silver produced in Potosí and other mines.

During the 19th century the desert came under control of Bolivia, Chile and Peru and soon became a zone of conflict due to unclear borders and the discovery of nitrate there. After the War of the Pacific, in which Chile annexed most of the desert, cities along the coast developed into international ports, and many Chilean workers migrated there.

The Pan-American Highway runs through the Atacama in a north-south trajectory.
