Oiseaux Glacés

Throughout the tough winter of 2011 I would often see little birds coming under my bushes and trees looking for berries or crab apples on the ground. Some of them would huddle and puff up in between thick branches covered with ice and snow. I thought they were the lucky ones, the survivors. Having the strength to feed, knowing where to find it, and staying strong through some nasty storms.
A few times we laid out fruit or seeds for them, being careful not to feed them crap or food with additives like other people did, since these type of chemicals weaken their immune system.
Every time I had a chance (dressed or not for the cold), I would sneak up on them and shoot pictures or video.
Many of the shots came out badly or didn’t come out at all due to non-cooperative wildlife, cold camera sensors, batteries, bad shooting (no sense covering up the truth), no tripod (shaking like a leaf) or simply too much snow interference. What you see in this brief production are the few that came out and some older ones from my collection.

Enjoy the show,
Leo

Fausses Fleurs – Fake Flowers

A while ago, as mother winter was raging a non ending snowstorm on us, I decided to produce a video based on warm images I find around my home. Since we have lots of plants, art, paintings and decorative silk flowers I selected a theme to do with faux flowers. Especially, since the weather was so disgusting and cold, flowers would create the right atmosphere and warmth lacking that day.
As I was putting my thoughts together, I decided to have a mix of reality and illusion. So I filmed and edited examples of real and faux and contrasted them. It was a good experiment, and it kept my mind away from the inclement weather, sub-zero temperatures, and snowdrifts of 6 to 8 feet in front of my home.

I hope you enjoy this short adventure,
Leo

Candombe de Montevideo

Since I had plenty of material remaining from my previous production of Candombe del Uruguay, I decided to follow up with this piece. The intensity and joy of the participants, dancers and drummers is just overwhelming. Even the spectators get into it and start dancing as they feel the strong beat of the drums. While I was editing this work, I couldn’t avoid tapping my hands and feet to the contagious beat 🙂

Special thanks to Marcos Martinez and the Intendencia de Montevideo for giving me access to film.
